The recognition agreement, in plain English
The recognition agreement is the document that says what the union is allowed to do here. It was signed in April and it is four pages long. This is what is in it.
What it covers
Pay, hours, holiday, sickness absence and any change to a shift pattern. Anything in this list is negotiated rather than announced.
What it does not cover
Individual grievances and disciplinary matters, which follow the company procedure with a rep present. Different process, same right to representation.
Facilities
A noticeboard in each break room, the room behind the canteen for meetings, and paid time off for reps to do the duties named in the agreement.
Questions people actually ask
Does this apply to agency workers?
Partly. The consultation clauses cover everyone on site. The pay clauses cover directly employed staff only, and closing that gap is the branch's next objective.
Can it be withdrawn?
Either side can give six months' notice. In practice it is renegotiated rather than withdrawn, and the notice clause has never been used.
Not a member yet?
Ten minutes to join, and it is the difference between raising something on your own and raising it with everyone behind you.
